Do You Enjoy Feeding the Birds in Regina? Make Sure You Are Feeding them the Correct Food!

As the weather gets warmer and the geese and other birds have returned to Saskatchewan, it is important to know what types of foods are good for them and what can cause them harm, or even kill them. 


When waterfowl are fed items like bread and popcorn, malnutrition and disease can become an issue especially in young developing birds. 

Appropriate food to feed them include: 

• Peas
• Lentils
• Lettuce/Spinach
• Parsley
• Barley/Wheat

 Feeding bread, crackers, popcorn, cereal and pastry to water birds may result in: 

• Angel Wing, which can make feathers grow quickly, causing strains on their muscles, preventing them from flying 
• Heart disease in water birds 
• Algal bloom which gets into birds lungs and can kill them
