Newcomers—Did you know?
There are benefits and credits that you could get if:
• You have a social insurance number
• You file your taxes every year, even if you have no income at all.
We use the information from your
return to calculate your federal benefits and credits, and any related provincial and territorial programs.
Apply for benefits and credits
Canada child benefit
Up to $6,400 per year for each child under the age of 6
Up to $5,400 per year for each child aged 6-17
an additional $2,730 per year if your child is eligible for the child disability benefit
To apply, fill out these two forms and send them to the CRA (Canada revenue Agency):
- RC66, Canada Child Benefits Application
- RC66SCH, Status in Canada/Statement of Income
If you have low or modest income:
Up to $552/year
GST/HST credits + $145/year per child
To apply, fill out this form and send it to the CRA:
- RC151, GST/HST Credit Application for Individuals Who Become Residents of Canada
File your taxes every year
You will need to report all income earned, inside and outside Canada for the part of the year you were a resident of Canada.

Use the form for the province or territory you lived in on December 31 (you’ll need an additional form if you lived in Quebec – visit Revenu Quebec.ca/en for more information).
Complete the form and send it to the Canada Revenue Agency:
· Visit cra.gc.ca/GetReadyfor all the information you need to help you file online OR
· Send your completed form by mail – addresses can be found at cra.gc.ca/taxcentre

A free program where volunteers prepare income tax and benefit returns for those with a modest income and a simple tax situation.

Authorize a representative
You can give permission to another person (such as a family member, a friend, or an accountant) to deal with the CRA for you.
Fill out Form T1013, Authorizing or Cancelling a Representative, and send it to the CRA. Find the form at cra.gc.ca/forms.
My Account and Direct Deposit:
If you are registered for My Account, you can sign up for direct deposit and get your refund and other payments like your child tax benefits deposited into your bank account.
